Unsolved Chicken Mystery....

Smidge on chicken alert

Smidge here. For some January fun, Ann and the Girls of  Zoolatry came up with an idea - to reveal an unsolved mystery from your home.  Ours involves a chicken.  A few weeks back, Mom posted about a white chicken that showed up in our yard one day but we couldn't figure out where he came from. (To read more on that post click here.)

We live in a very wooded area with about 10 - 15 acres behind us and a pasture across from us.  Where could a chicken have come from?  Mom emailed the local paper about a found chicken and to her surprise they posted on the front page!  Two people emailed her - one wanted the chicken if no one claimed him (wonder if they wanted to eat it?)  and the other lost her chickens when some critter got into her chicken coop but after talking to her Mom found out that she lived 6 miles from us down the road.  A long way for a chicken to walk!

Front page news!

Our neighbors to the west of us, behind our cat house, have a cat named Jack who comes down to visit us on occasion so they certainly would not have chickens.

Cat house with neighbors to the left.

The neighbors across the street do have a small chicken coop but to get to them you have to go down our driveway, across the road, across the pasture and up the mountain to the coop.

The first building across the road on the left is the chicken coop.

The chicken is in our yard in early morning and late afternoon - just about when mom puts food out for the wild birds.  Sometimes he stays for a while during the day but most days he is not around at all.  Mom looks for him everywhere but he is not to be found. Where do you think this chicken comes from?  Is he the escapee from down the road, a fugitive in hiding in our woods or just a wandering fellow from across the way?  Why is he here and where does he go during the day?  Help Mom solve this mystery before she goes nuts!  Any ideas?

That is simply bizarre!

I bet the chicken works for Chick-fil-A as part of their PR team. It's just checking out possible filming locations for an upcoming commercial shoot. Nothing to be alarmed about, they do this all the time.

We thinks the chicken is really a double agent. When he's not there, he's probably in his high-tech coop, watching you on hidden camera. MOL!

That is indeed a mystery!! Chickens are such skittish creatures aren't they and don't really wander far from their coop so it's truly a mystery!! Oh but I hope she remains safe and uneaten! LOL!! Yay for mum looking out for her!!

Take care

Perhaps the chicken heard your food was better than where he came from!

I agree with Prancer Pie. Has all the earmarks of a double agent!!

Well the only thing we can say is that the darn chicken has crossed the road. Maybe it got chased out of that chicken coop down the road and found your delicious bird seed. That is a good mystery. Sounds like the chicken has found it's new home.

Chickens can walk and kind of flying for quite some distans. So our guess is that he is from the lady 6 miles away.

I dont know the answer but I think that 6 miles is not that far if it was wandering for a while. He obviously likes it at your place but where does he go in the day. A mystery indeed.. Hugs GJ xx

You do have a mystery there. How funny it made the front page of the newspaper. :)

Possibly someone was transporting chickens in the back of a pickup and one got loose. You're correct she didn't trek 6 miles. She's vulnerable out there...how do you feel about a chicken coop and fresh eggs ;)

That's one "free range" chicken!
I don't have a clue about the situation, but I do think you're fortunate to live in a place where that story would make the front page.

We think its an angel from heaven come to bring joy and confusion to your life. That is a real mystery. Then one day, if he doesn't show up, you'll go crazy wondering what happened to him.

This is a great mystery, but I have no idea how to solve it - LOL!!!

You can have cats and chickens. Grandpa had chickens for years as well as Grandma's Cats (which are really Grandpa's as he takes care of them). Cats don't bother chickens (chickens are very vicious), cats leave geese and turkeys alone too. Anyway we thinks the chicken belongs at Jack's house and that it is coming to visit along with Jack.
